Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

Are potato chips a Midwestern thing?

March 14 is National Potato Chip Day, so BetWisconsin.com took a pause on our usual coverage of attempts to bring legal, regulated Wisconsin sports betting to the masses to ponder that question. Of course, we also wanted to know what the favorite potato chip flavors are among folks in Wisconsin.

We used Google Trends to see what states were most interested in potato chips. Then, we narrowed down which flavors locals love the most, according to search interest scores that we measured between Feb. 27 and March 5.

Here are the results.

After all, we’re talking about the state that’s the national king of dairy production. Cheddar flavored chips scored 26 compared to other topics of interest to top our list.

For that matter, dairy (well, at least dairy-inspired powdered flavoring) is also a component of the No. 2 flavor on our list in Wisconsin, which is sour cream and onion. That scored 24 points, followed by salt and vinegar in the third spot (19) points, then barbeque and classic flavors in a tie for fourth (18).

As far as our original question goes, the Midwest can definitely lay claim to being very enthusiastic about potato chips in general. The home of the Cheeseheads is No. 3 spot among states most interested in potato chips, according to our research. Wisconsin scores 89 points in our methodology, behind only Ohio (100) and Wyoming (95). North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Michigan are also states in the region that score in our top 10.
