Packers Odds Take Huge Hit Following Aaron Rodgers Trade

Packers Odds Take Huge Hit Following Aaron Rodgers Trade
Fact Checked by Blake Weishaar

The Green Bay Packers odds to win Super Bowl LVIII took an expected tumble after longtime franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets on April 24.

DraftKings Sportsbook opened the Packers as +3000 to win the Super Bowl earlier this year. As of May 2nd, they are +6500 at the same sportsbook. Subsequently, the overall Packers playoff chances also tumbled following Rodgers' departure.

The considerable increase in odds illustrates how much faith the market had in Rodgers and how little we know about replacement quarterback Jordan Love. Love was drafted by the Packers as Rodgers’ heir apparent at quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft but spent his first three seasons in the league on the bench. With Rodgers departing for New York, Love will be thrust into the crucible in a sink-or-swim moment.

Rodgers, a four-time Most Valuable Player, announced his intent to play for New York on the Pat McAfee Show earlier this year. The bombshell announcement sparked extended negotiations between the Green Bay and New York front offices. When it was finally completed, Green Bay received a package of four draft picks in exchange for parting ways with their longtime franchise quarterback. Rodgers wanted to play under former Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who currently fills the same role for the Jets.

Rodgers’ demands caught Green Bay’s front office and fans off guard. A year before the trade, Rodgers had signed a 3-year, $150 million extension with the Packers. It was believed at the time that it would be the final contract of Rodgers’ career as his playing days began to draw to a close.

Statistically, Rodgers is coming off the worst season of his career in 2022. His 12 interceptions nearly equaled his total interceptions from the previous three seasons combined (13), and he had zero games with more than 300 yards passing. Before last season, Rodgers never had less than three games of 300 or more yards passing.

DraftKings Sportsbook has the Packers at +2200 to win the NFC and +500 to win the NFC North.

Rogers, 39, began his NFL career when the Packers drafted him in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He is regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the sport’s history. He is in second place on the NFL’s all-time career passing rating list.
